The selection of Handball Planet includes 23 handball journalists, as well as fans who may vote for their favourites until 4 December. When the voting is completed, the best player in each of the eight categories will be announced (best goalkeeper, best right and left wing, best centre back, right back and left back, best pivot, best defensive player), as well as the best handball player of the year.

This is the fourth selection. Prior to Domagoj, the title of the best handball player in the world was won by the Hungarian Laszlo Nagy (2011) and Czech Filip Jicha (2012). Interestingly enough, the handball portal handball-planet.com selection had 6,500 fans giving their votes in 2011, 13,000 in 2012, and more than 146,000 fans last year.
